Want to write for melsbrushes.co.uk?

I have been really busy lately, with not much time to update my blog. Free advertising space in return! Give me a shout if you're interested.

I just bought a new camera - a Canon EOS 500D (Rebel T1i in the states). Very excited, slightly scared that I spent so much money!
Hopefully this will be a whole new phase of creativity, I can't wait for it to be delivered.. Though i just saw paypal has made it an echeque which will male it slooow to arrive :(

Anyone who is into DLSR photography i would love to have some pointers for an absolute first timer - the last time i used an SLR was a long time ago in college, way before digital cameras were even a twinkle in somebodys eye. So any recommended websites or communities would be much appreciated. I'm planning on creating lots of photo stock too to add to my brushes once I get to grips with it, so watch this space!

An interview with the 2nd place winner!

This is the second of my three features on the winners of the Corona Save The Beach art competition.

2nd place went to Mitchell Matthews, known as krazy3 here on Deviant Art. His winning photograph is a  striking photo manipulation with a pollution theme depicting a beautiful beach blighted by factory works and chimneys.

It's Happening. by krazy3

I interviewed Mitchell about his artwork. Here's what he had to say..

Q. What part of the world are you from?

A. People ask me this question a lot, and… I don't know. I move every few years due to my dad's job, so I don't really come from any one place. All I can say is I come from the world.

Q. You're 17 years old. Are you studying art or photography?

A. I've taken a couple art classes and a photography class throughout my high school career, but I'm mostly self taught. I enjoy it as a hobby for now but I hope to make it into a career in the near future. I found that I had a real liking for photography, then began taking photos. From there I just carried on. I hope to study photography/film at CalArts someday.

Q. How long have you been a dA member?

A. I've been a member of dA for 3 years now. I browsed the site for about a year before that.

Q. How long have been taking photographs? What are your favourite subjects?

A. I've been taking photos for a few years now. I got really into it about 2 years ago. My favorite subjects include… everything.

Q. What camera do you use?

A. Currently I use a Nikon D40X. I have several lenses, a tripod, and a few filters.

Q. Would you like a career in photography or art, or do you have other grand plans?

A. I would love a career in photography or film. I'm working on doing that right now.

Q. What inspired you to create the winning piece 'It's Happening'? How was it created?

A. I was assigned a project in class to create an image to convey an idea. I decided that I'd like to give people something to really think about, to try to make it as scary as possible. And so this came into being. It started with a photo I took in Mozambique at a resort I was at. I darkened the scene, replaced the sky with factory smoke, and touched it up in a few places.

Q. Do you have an interest in environmental issues? If so which ones do you feel strongest about?

A. I do. I feel that hydrogen power should be utilized to power cars. Perfectly clean and efficient. Just expensive.

Q. What do you think is the best thing people can do to protect the environment?

A. I think the best thing that people can do within reason is to get involved. Ride your bike to the store, start recycling, make a compost bin, use reusable grocery bags, and other things along those lines.

Q. What do you think of the Corona Save The Beach campaign?

A. I think it's a very positive thing. The more people are alerted to the problems with our current environment, the faster they'll slow down or get fixed.

Many thanks Mitchell! Don't forget to check out more of excellent his work on deviant art krazy3.deviantart.com/ and on his website.

An interview with the winner!

As you know, I recently announced the winners of the Corona Save The Beach art competition news.deviantart.com/article/93…. We had many wonderful entries highlighting the issues of beach conservation. The winner of the contest is Tiberiu Teodor-Stanciu, known as Pandemoneus here on Deviant Art. His winning photograph is a shot taken in Romania, and shows a striking contrast of the 'behind the scenes' litter piled up next to a popular tourist beach.

Litoral by Pandemoneus

An Interview with Pandemoneus

Mel: Hi Teo, nice to meet you. thanks for allowing me to interview you!

Hi Mel! First of all I’d like to present myself, I’m Tiberiu Teodor-Stanciu and I’m honored to be granted the first place in Corona Save The Beach contest. I would also like to congratulate all the participants for it means a lot that so many care about the environment.

Q. Where are you from?
There is saying about the city of seven mounds, a city that emerged as a cultural capital in turbid times about 600 years ago and that is: “ Every stone has it’s own story to tell as a witness of the past” . Iasi, the second city by size in Romania located in a bohemian geographical set that inspired many painters, poets, writers, musicians over the centuries. I’m fond of my native city and proud to belong in a medium that encourage progress through culture. If you want to know more why don’t you come ask the stones yourself.

Q. You are 19 years old - are you studying art or photography?
Even though as a child I have started playing with shapes and different light sources which are like the best background for a future photographer, I pretty much ended up doing architecture. Today I’m an architecture major at G.M. Cantacuzino – Iasi college, in second grade. Photography made it in my life as a powerful tool of expression of my thoughts and imagination gaining more and more ground in my daily time schedule. As I like challenges I attended many contests having by now quite a few prizes and exhibitions.

Q. How long have you been a Deviant Art member?
I joined Deviant Art almost 3 years ago to get in touch with the largest art community online. This has definitely been a big step forward for me, as I been evaluated not only by my friends but also by strangers.

Q. How long have been taking photographs and creating artwork? What are your favourite subjects?
As a child I have start drawing just because my brother didn’t play football with me so I had to draw with him. So my way revealed itself to me step by step with ups and downs until this moment where I finally get a grip of what art can be and is. In my family I was always the one taking pictures but photography is somehow new to me as I only sow de potential art in pictures almost 3 years ago.

As an architect student I have my connection with structures, buildings, textures and all sorts of architecture details but I also like pictures with some flesh. Another target of my work is to awake in all of us a critique eye, able so see the real world around us with its real issues.

Q. What camera do you use? Do you use photoshop or other software to edit your shots? Your work has a lovely vintage feel - I wondered how that is created?
My Panasonic DMC-FX10 is a gift from Santa, even though I wished for something better, but hey, you can’t be mad at Santa. That’s why I often feel the need to compensate with post-processes the lacks of the camera. I use Photoshop to edit my pictures, to add some contrast, some textures, filters, to sharpen focus points and many other little things. The vintage look of my gallery is mostly due to the textures and small amount of saturation.

Q. Would you like a career in photography/art/design in the future, or do you have other grand plans?
As I said, my bond is to architecture, then with anything related with art - including photography. Even so, I really wish to study photography and film at George Enescu – Art University - Iasi. Architecture is a large domain encompassing inside photography itself among many other arts, so my evolution as an architect goes hand in hand with my progress as a photographer. Also, related to art I discovered a while ago a new side of myself in music, so by now I write my own music for classical guitar.

My main dream is to become an architect so, until I reach that star i will engage in any activity related to art that can improve my skills as an artist.

Q. What inspired you to take the winning shot 'Litoral'? How was it created? Can you explain the title?
After quite a long sun exposure at the beach I have started walking and kept walking on the shores of the Black Sea until I reached this spot of colossal contrast between the overcrowded beach and the massive amounts of garbage hidden behind a small cement fence. Even though I love my country I get very angry when I see indifference, negligence and recklessness from tourists and local authorities alike regarding cleanliness of the public places such as the beach. The title “ Litoral “ means <<seaside>> and it is a sarcastic remark meant to show everybody what is behind the scenes and that is a huge pile of garbage.

Q. Do you have an interest in environmental issues? If so which issues do you feel most strongly about?
I’m not really into “Saving the planet” concept, the planet itself has seen worse than man, but we really have to do something about the environment. My interests regarding environmental issues are mostly concentrated on education as I think that an educated human being leads us to an cleaner healthier environment.

Q. What do you think is the best thing people can do to protect the environment?
I don’t know if we are capable of changing the past, but what we can at least expect from everybody is to preserve what we already have by encouraging a healthy technological progress.

Q. What are your thoughts on the Corona Save The Beach campaign?
I stand proud and applaud the initiative of the Corona Save the Beach campaign. It feels great to know that some of us are not just looking how everything they love and respect vanish into negligence but they are making a lot to prevent and stop this waste.

Q. What are the beaches like in your country?
Even though the authorities are pushing themselves up to fulfill the expectations of a civilized country, in regards of cleanliness the individuals are not pushing hard enough.

Thank you Teo - and best of luck with your future career!

Save The Beach
This  contest invites you to create artwork on the theme of ‘Save The Beach’. It’s being run in collaboration with Corona Extra to support Corona’s Save the Beach campaign and to highlight the issues of beach conservation.

:sun: :sun: :sun: :sun: :sun:

The Brief

Submit artwork in any medium on the theme of beach conservation, litter and pollution. This could be sculptural - created from actual litter and debris you find at the beach, and then photographed (great examples of environmental beach litter art by artist Jane Rose can be seen here: [link]) or you could even create sand sculptures!
If you don’t live near a beach, you can submit photography, digital pieces, photo manipulations or traditional art depicting the plight of our beaches and the need to conserve them. You can also include text if you wish, or add Corona Save The Beach banners
IMPORTANT: This DOESN'T MEAN JUST PICTURES OF BEACHES! The entry has to reflect environmental/beach conservation/litter/pollution concerns.

The Project
The Corona Save The Beach campaign is a pioneer environmental initiative to identify, clean up and preserve the beaches of Europe and educate the public about the importance of keeping beaches clean. The campaign is supported by the Foundation for Environmental Education and it’s Blue Flag programme, the quality seal awarded each year to beaches and marinas meeting strict environmental criteria. As well as running this art contest, members of the public were invited to send in their photographs or videos of dirty beaches they visit. In July 2009, Capocotta, a beach on the Roman coast, was the beach chosen by a public vote to be cleaned. Capocotta was shortlisted along with other areas including Puertito de Guimar in Tenerife, Spain, Heraclion in Greece and a beach in Norfolk, UK.
Start preparing your entries for the 2010 Corona Save the Beach campaign – get behind your local beach and it may be the winning beach to be “saved” by Corona.

So, if you are struggling for ideas - how about getting inspired with these?

:lightbulb: How about a future vision of a forgotten and filthy beach.. I'm thinking darkside piles of trash reaching up to the heavens

:lightbulb: Or how about beach cleaning vector fairies - ninja style?

:lightbulb: A photo manip collage of an extreme beach cleaning machine?

:lightbulb: Or maybe psychedelic beach trash fractals?

:lightbulb: Photo collages of beach trash monsters fighting trash cans?

:lightbulb: A 'spot the difference' find the litter game?

:lightbulb: An actual sandcastle?

:lightbulb: A photoshopped sandcastle/design?

And some more ideas suggested by LikaLaruku..

:lightbulb: Person or people washing oil off or removing soda rings from beach wildlife (seaguls, etc).

:lightbulb: People trying to find a place to put their towel on a trashy beach.

:lightbulb: A dumptruck dumping on a beach with a caption about how a beach is not a dumping ground.

:lightbulb: People on a beach. There are recycling containers everywhere & several people are using them.

:lightbulb: A hidden object game with a list of things that don't belong.

:lightbulb: A group of people looking unhappily at a sign on the beach that says it's closed due to the condition it's in.

CoronaSaveTheBeach have lots of stock images in their faves you can use...

Like these of beaches coronasavethebeach.deviantart.…
Or these ones of sand coronasavethebeach.deviantart.…
Or some inspiration in the form of environmental 'green' art coronasavethebeach.deviantart.… (note these aren't stock they are deviations)

In 2009, Capocotta, a beach on the Roman coast, was the beach chosen by a public vote to be cleaned. Capocotta was shortlisted along with other areas including Puertito de Guimar in Tenerife, Spain, Heraclion in Greece and a beach in Norfolk, UK.
